Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

At what temperature should the thermal film be laminated?

95-115°C. Indicative value that depends on the characteristics of the calender, the lamination speed and the type of film.
How long is the film warranty?
6 months from the date of the receipt of the goods.
Can the film be glued to the film?

Yes, with two-component adhesive or with a thermal film.
Is it possible to laminate the matt film from the matt side?
Yes, it is.
Is a plastic film printable?
Yes, preferably with chemically treated films. However, we recommend carrying out some printing tests before proceeding with the entire printing run.
Is it possible to hot stamp the film?
Yes. Depending on the type of film, you should use the right foil. We recommend consulting your foil seller first.
Is it possible to screen print the film?
Yes, with specific screen printings for plastic supports.
Is it possible to apply UV varnish on the film?
Yes. It is necessary to periodically check the efficiency of the UV lamps and the cleanliness of the dishes.
Is it possible to print on OFFSET and UV OFFSET films?

It is possible to print with UV OFFSET inks, but not with traditional OFFSET inks.
Is it possible to print in thermal transfer?
Yes. We recommend carrying out few tests before proceeding with the entire print run.
Is it possible to laminate a digital print?
Yes. Based on the type of digital printer, we recommend considering the use of specific films for lamination on digital printing.
How is the weight and square meters of the roll calculated?
Weight: width * length * basis weight.
Square meters: width * length.
Note: the width must be expressed in meters.
How do you convert the cost per kg of a roll into cost per square meter?
Cost per square meter: price per kg/film yield.
How is the cost per square meter of an adhesive calculated?
Price Euro per kg/1000*grams of coated adhesive.
What is the melting point of the film?
BOPP >160°C, PET>245°C.
What is the surface tension or wettability?
It is the ability of the film to retain liquids such as inks, varnishes or adhesives.
What is the corona treatment? How is it measured?
It is used to increase the film wettability. This is done through a special machine (corona treater) that helps the formation of polar groups on the film surface (corona effect). The measurement is done using liquid test inks.
What is the acrylic treatment? How is it measured?
It is the deposition on the film of an acrylic layer which allows you to have a better grip of the inks.
What is the flame treatment?
It is used to increase the film wettability. It is obtained by exposing its surface to a controlled flame.
What does bi-oriented film mean?
Bi-orientation is a mechanical operation that stretches the film both in the machine direction and in the transverse direction. This operation helps to determine the mechanical characteristics of the film.
What is the direction of the brushed lines of brushed films?
The brushing lines can be in the machine direction or in the direction of unwinding of the film.
How to laminate metallized films?
The side to be laminated is the metallized one. In lamination the adhesives to be used are water-based acrylic and solvent-free polyester-based polyurethane.
What is the cause of static electricity and the vacuum effect?

Static charge is caused by:
1) Unwinding of the roll too fast.
2) Too dry climate.

3) Rubbing of laminated sheets on the stacker.
4) Variations in paper moisture.

The vacuum effect is instead due to two extremely specular surfaces which in contact with each other do not allow the passage of air. This might occur both in one side lamination or both sides laminations. Very smooth papers might accentuate this phenomenon even in one side lamination.
How to solve the flatness problems of the embossed films?
By using rolls with a width less than 700mm.
How to check the drying of the printing inks?
By using white spirit. With a brush apply a small amount of white spirit on the printed sheet. If the ink is perfectly dry, there should be no streaks of color. Otherwise, it is necessary to wait before proceeding with lamination.
Which are the storage conditions of the film?
It is recommended keeping the film away from heat sources and humidity. Protect the partially used rolls. For more information, see the attachment under Topics.
Are the film suitable for direct contact with food?

It is necessary to refer to the Declaration of suitability for contact with food for each product code.
What is the procedure for claiming a product?
Collect film sample, laminate sample, label and send everything to Mag Data Spa.
What is the colour tone and chromatic influence?
Colour tone: chemical reaction of printing inks with acrylic adhesives and UV varnishes. This reaction happens with a change in the colour tone. Chromatic influence: see attachment under Topics.
Is it possible to varnish or thermal print on the anti-scratch and velvety film?
Yes. It is necessary to carry out homologation tests before proceeding with the entire run.
Which are the differences between Xerox digital printing and other digital printers?
The differences are mainly related to the composition of the film. To laminate a Xerox printout it is recommended using a specific film.
How long do you need to wait between lamination and further processing?
2 days, it depends on the type of print and drying conditions.
How long do you need to wait between lamination and further processing?
2 days, it depends on the type of print, support and environmental conditions.
Separation of polyester laminated sheet.
Unlike polypropylene, polyester requires thermal cutting (hot blade).
What is the barrier effect of the film?
The ability to limit the passage of gas or steam through the film.
Creasing:
Mechanical pressure exerted on the coupled to help the creasing of the paper. It is important to check that the film adhesive has had time to net-like and that the printing inks are perfectly dry.
What is the most suitable technology for printing with metallic inks?
Water coupling (acrylic adhesives in water dispersion).
The anti-set:
The anti-set powder is used to slide the sheets. However, it might cause adhesion problems of the film on the support and make the coupled matt.
Which paper to use to get the best effect from the metallized pet?
Coated papers (glossy or matt) and specular to avoid orange peel.
Is it possible to laminate hand cards?
No, it is not recommended.
How does lamination affect paper moisture?
Humidity has a direct influence on the entire lamination process. Humidity changes the behavior of the paper, inks, adhesive and, to a lesser extent, the film. Highly moisture paper produces a blocking effect and is electrically charged. Furthermore, strong variations in humidity can change the size of the sheet.
Is it possible to laminate PVC?
Yes, it is.
Is it possible to laminate pet and bopp?
It is only possible to laminate thermal films with EVA adhesive or with a two-components adhesive.
Anti-scratch films and scratch tests:
Scratchability must be checked by letting the film rest after lamination. In laboratory a special calibrated weight slide is used which works several times on the same point.
Primer or laminated varnishes:
Primer: a varnish suitable for further processing. A finished varnish cannot receive further processing.
How to couple laminated sheets to cardboard?
By using vinyl-based adhesives in watery dispersion. Pay attention to the humidity caused by the adhesive which might create problems for the laminated sheet.
Reactivation of the dry film adhesive during subsequent processing:
Book spine bonding or thermoforming. Therefore pay attention to the exposure of the film to heat sources and time.
When to use polyether-based adhesive and when to use polyester-based adhesive:
When coupling polyester films, the use of polyester-based polyurethane adhesives is recommended.
